Both Ayurveda and Vedic Astrology are sophisticated parts of Yoga which aims at Self-Realization.  Originating in the ancient Vedic traditions of India over 5000 years ago.  Vedic astrology, or Jyotish as it is known in India is the traditional term for the eye of the Vedas. It describes the planetary patterns at the time of our birth and their influence on human life. This can give us valuable clues to understanding our life’s purpose. Through careful analysis of these cosmic influences, Vedic Astrology can help us realistically evaluate our strengths and life challenges in order to be more self aware and successful. By forecasting the changing trends and periods of our lives, Vedic Astrology can enable us to make better choices and as a consequence be more satisfied. It offers practical remedial measures to alleviate areas of difficulty, giving us the awareness to manifest our true destiny and create peace, happiness, and harmony on all levels.

Ayurveda teaches we are a composite of three bodies that encase the soul: Physical, Astral, and Causal. The Physical body is a composite of: earth, water, fire, air, and ether and sustained by eating. The Astral body is more subtle and is sustained by the five senses and emotion. We experience it through the physical body, and it is an electromagnetic field of energy affected by the planets. The Causal body is our innermost desires and impulses and is only touched through deep sleep or meditation where we go beyond the ego into the superconscious. The causal body is our souls driving seed and causes the astral body to arise from it.

The Relevance of Vedic Astrology and The Difference from Western Astrology

Physics tells us the solar system was created by a cloud of interstellar gas that collapsed under its own gravity and created the Sun. The particles around it became the planets due to gravitational and magnetic cosmic forces. The earth is one of those planets. Our bodies are made of the earth elements. Therefore, planetary influences affect our bodies as we are star-stuff imbued by universal consciousness. The movement of the earth in relation to planets affects us physically and mentally at an astral level.  Vedic Astrology is distinctly different from what we think of as astrology here in the West.

The difference is that in Vedic Astrology we use the sidereal zodiac which is based on the fixed, observable positions of the constellations, as we see them in the sky. Western astrology, in contrast, uses what is called the tropical zodiac. The tropical zodiac is based not on the fixed observable positions but rather on the relative and changeable position of the sun which is a mathematical point that starts on the suns location on the Vernal equinox.

In Vedic Astrology, we don’t think of people in terms of their Sun sign, as we do in tropical astrology. Instead, we enter the chart through what is called the “ascendant,”  or Lagna the constellation that is rising on the Eastern horizon at the time of a person’s birth. This sets up the harmonic relationship between the planets at the time of birth, and gives clues about an individual’s personality, physical body, and the way the person presents themselves to the world. In short, your Karmic blueprint.

The Moon is also important in Vedic astrology and spends approximately one day in one of 27 lunar mansions or asterisms known as Nakshatras. Vedic Astrology is also more accurate and predictive. It uses a system known as the Vimshotra Dasha system which can show when certain events will take place based on the  Birth Nakshatras or the placement of the Moon when you were born. This is also the basis of relationship compatibility as the moon is the mind and emotions. This gives a much more accurate interpretation of a life. Vedic Astrology is mostly attributed to Maharishi Parashara who compiled the textbook on astrology known as  Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. He is also the father of Veda Vayasa who wrote the Indian epic Mahahbaratha of which The Bagavad Gita is a part.
